Today we are going to take a look at unreleased CPU Cooler Tranquillo by GELID Solutions. Now a days all newer CPUs come with an "OK" coolers. However for some of us those coolers might not be enough to get the job done. By us I mean Computer Enthusiasts and geeks. If you want to get the most performance out of your machine, you need to consider better cooling that stock coolers. It is a pain to get the right cooler with the right thermal compound. GELID Solutions is a relatively new player in the CPU cooler market. Their first cooler didn't end up being a popular item for overclockers. This is their second attempt at CPU coolers for the PC Enthusiasts out there. Let us take a closer look at Tranquillo and see how it compares to the stock i7 860 cooler.

About the Product

There isn't any information available on Tranquillo at this point. This is product has not been released yet.

Specifications

Now that we got specifications out of the way, lets take a closer look at Tranquillo.

Closer look

Rear Shot

Tranquillo comes in a relatively big box. From one look at this box you can tell that this cooler is going to be pretty big. Most of the newer coolers out there are bigger than the standard coolers. So i wont be surprised if this is the case with Tranquillo. On the front of the box GELID Solutions introducing the cooler "Tranquillo" with big letters and some technical information about the unit. Tranquillo is designed to work with a number of sockets from Intel and AMD. Some are Socket 775, 1366, 1156 for Intel and Socket 754/939/940/AM2/AM2+ and AM3 for AMD.

On the back of the box we found some details on the sockets available and air flow concept of the Tranquillo. Tranquillo is using optimized fan blade design to provide silent operation and high airflow. What is important to mention is that Tranquillo comes with PWM fan. Intelligent PWM Fan control will help you save money and provide better performance at high speeds and low temperatures.

Out of the box
Contents

There isn't much to Tranquillo. It comes with all the hardware you need for the installation and of course Tranquillo itself. What is important to mention here is the highly detailed installation guide. If this is your first time installing a CPU cooler, it is almost crucial to check the installation manual prior to the installation.

Back Shot

Tranquillo has two main parts, the heat sink with copper cpu block and a fan. Fan gets to be installed by special clamps which claps on to the actual heat sink. Heat sink is highly unusual in its design as it remind me of letter "V" or something from the Batman movies.

On the top of the heat sink GELID Solutions included a plastic sign if you will with their logo and a logo for Tranquillo. Rather stylish i may add. Tranquillo is powered by four heat pipes which are nicely connected to the copper CPU block. The actual heat sink is made out of the light aluminum which make a big difference when it comes to the weight of the cooler.

Cooper Block
Our Test Subject

There isn't much of reflection going on here off the CPU copper block. Its been proven that the polished surfaces stick to each other better. Today we are going to be working with Asus P7P55D-E motherboard. It comes with a stock i7 860 CPU cooler. We are going to take a look at some data in just few minutes so stay put.

i7 Mounts
Detailed Instructions

It wasn't hard to find the right mounts for the right socket. With helpful instructions it took only a few seconds. Mounting them was pretty easy too. As long as you follow the instructions, you should have no problems with Tranquillo.

GC-2 Thermal Compound
Installed

Tranquillo comes with GC-2 Thermal Compound solution. GC-2 was designed by GELID Solutions and it provides maximum performance. As you can see from the picture above, this thing is amazingly big! I mean look at it, its taking half of our motherboard.

IMG_1614.jpg IMG_1615.jpg
Highly Secured
Back plate mount

Tranquillo mountings are very much secured to your board. You would need to take your board out from your case to install this CPU cooler. Tranquillo requires for the back plate to be installed and that makes this process a bit painful but yet worth it.

Installed Fan
Clearance

Fan installs without any problems as well. This is a 120 mm fan which spins anywhere from 750 RPM to 1500 RPM (PWM). We looked at our ram while installation and well as you can see its pretty close to the heat sink. Will you have trouble removing ram with this unit being so close? We didn't, so you shouldn't have any problems either.

IMG_1618.jpg IMG_1619.jpg
Clearance
Clearance

There is a perfect clearance all around the socket and the heat pipes. Nothing is touching the capacitors and any voltage regulators on the board. This is very important to mention. You do not want to cause your components to overheat because of an outside source.

Ready to rock!

Now that we got pictionary out of the way, lets take a look at some test data.

Testing

ASUS P7P55D-E LGA 1156 Intel P55 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard
2 SAPPHIRE 100225L Radeon HD 3870 512MB 256-bit GDDR4 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP CrossFire
Intel Core i7-860 Lynnfield 2.8GHz LGA 1156 95W Quad-Core Processor
Western Digital Caviar SE16 250GB 7200 RPM SATA-300 Hard Drive
CORSAIR XMS3 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory

Today we are going to be performing two tests. First test is going to be with stock Intel CPU cooler and the second is with GELID Solutions Tranquillo. In both these tests we are going to take a look at idle and loaded states of the CPU and its cores. For loading the CPU and all its cores we re going to be using Prime 95 increments of 20 minutes for idle and load states. Our temperature readers are SpeedFan 4.38 and Core Temp 0.99.5.

Stock CPU Cooler Idle
Stock CPU Cooler Loaded

Out first test was performed with stock CPU cooler. In the idle state we have gotten a low CPU temperature of 14C. This is rather good and unexpected for the stock CPU cooler. When under load our cpu got as hot as 73C. This is pretty dangerous considering the maximum advised temperature for our chip is 75C.

Stock CPU Core Temp

As you can see the cores were pretty hot as well. We are seeing 73-74C on all 4 cores and in the idle state we see temperatures as low as 13C.

Tranquillo Idle
Tranquillo Loaded

Our second test was with Tranquillo. In the idle state we have gotten temperatures as low as 14C. This is the same temperature as with the stock CPU cooler. When loading our CPU and all 4 cores to 100% we have gotten temperatures as high as 69C. This is a big improvement from the stock CPU cooler. Over all we have dropped 4C and that's a big difference.

Our cores were in the same ball park. A range of 65-62C was achieved on all 4 cores.

Conclusion

I certainly think GELID Solutions are on the right track here and with Tranquillo in the market they have much better chance than some other well known CPU cooler manufactures. The over all experience with Tranquillo has been great! The installation took a while but when you know what you are doing and love modding your machine, this task just makes it all better at the end. If you would like to shave off a few degrees from your current CPU cooler, please consider Tranquillo by GELID Solutions as an option, you will not be disappointed. One of the important features of Tranquillo is the Intelligent PWM Fan Control system which is designed to provide silent operation and low CPU temperatures and just right accelerations for the your CPU temperature becomes higher. Tranquillo is highly recommended by UMLan! 10/10.

Some pros we found:

Provides good cooling.

Intelligent PWM Fan Control system.
